Day 212 – The Alaska Spoon (Jimmy Hoffa Edition)

Today’s spoon is a lovely little souvenir from Alaska, featuring a very poor representation of the state flag at the top.

Why Alaska? Well, on this day in 1975, labor leader Jimmy Hoffa disappeared, never to be heard from again. And although there have been many theories about where his body may have ended up, it’s safe to say that he’s not in Alaska.

Day 211 – The Twin Spoons of Firenze and Pisa

My friend Kate spends a lot of time in Italy, and because I ask nicely, she brings back a spoon or two from each trip.

Last month, she brought back the spoon on the left, from Florence. It looked familiar, so I dug through my spoon collection and found one she brought back years ago from Pisa (right).

Sure enough, they’re the same spoon, with different badges at the top of the handle. The Pisa spoon also has a lovely engraving of its famous leaning tower in the bowl.

Day 210 – The Charles and Diana Wedding Spoon

On July 29, 1981, the whole world watched as the heir to the throne of England, His Royal Highness, Prince Charles, married Lady Diana Spencer in St. Paul’s Cathedral in London.

And this mess of a spoon commemorates that event. Yes, those are portraits of the royal couple, most likely done in oil pastel on the back of a receipt and then shrunk down to fit on the top of the handle. One of a kind!

The back of the spoon gives all the vital details of the big event, juuuust in case you didn’t know who they were from their incredibly lifelike portraits on the front.

Fun Fact: Princess Diana’s train on her dress was 25 feet long—which about four Princess Dianas stacked end to end!
