No special occasion here, just a pretty spoon. Värmland is a county in west central Sweden, smack dab between Oslo and Stockholm. It is the birthplace of Selma Louisa Lagerlöf, the first female writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, and it shares a border with Västmanland, the ancestral home of my people.
The hand-painted flower in the bowl of the spoon is Värmland’s flower, Skogsstjärna, or arctic starflower.
On this day in 1788, New York State was admitted to the Union. Happy Birthday, New York!
This spoon from Niagara Falls was made by the Baker-Manchester Manufacturing Company of Providence, Rhode Island, which would date it to somewhere between 1904-1914.
Me: “I’m really having a hard time making up facts about this spoon.”
Emma: “At first glance, you might think it’s Paris, but it’s not. It’s just a spoon. A spoon that says TOKYO.”
Emma: “Wait, that’s not what I said. If you’re going to quote me, get it right.”
