Day 28 – The Nagasaki Snake and Rat Spoon

This beautiful spoon is from Nagasaki, Japan. It’s about 5 inches long and has a snake and rats on the handle.

The bowl has an etching of a poppy (or maybe a plum blossom?) and the back of the bowl says “Nagasaki” and an 84 silver mark.

It was likely made prior to World War II.

Before the United States issued an order that would revoke the civil liberties of thousands of American citizens with Japanese ancestry.

Before our government took away their homes and businesses.

Before our government or them in detention camps.

Before the US dropped a bomb on Nagasaki, killing somewhere between 39,000 and 80,000 Japanese citizens.
